Post 2: Review Important concepts of Psychology and Pedagogy

Objectives:

  • Recall information from the syllabus.
  • Review key concepts in Psychology and Pedagogy and reflect on their application to human learning.
  • Introduce a brief study of how the brain learns.

What is Psychology?
 Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behavior.
What is Pedagogy?
Pedagogy is the art or science of the teaching children profession. It is also the principles, practice and work of a teacher.
Goals  of  Psychology
Four  primary  goals  of  psychology  are  to  describe,  explain,  predict,  and  change  behavior. 
Goals  of  Pedagogy
To send accumulated knowledge, skills and values from one generation to the next trough education.
Five approaches that have guided modern psychology research
  •            Biological Approach
  •            Psychodynamic Approach
  •            Behavioral Approach
  •            Cognitive Approach
  •            Humanistic Approach

Elements of good teaching
  •            Content Knowledge
  •            Quality Of Instruction
  •            Classroom Climate
  •            Classroom Management
  •            Teacher Beliefs
  •            Professional  Behaviors 

Educational psychology
It is a branch of modern psychology, concerned with the learning processes and psychological problems associated with the teaching and training of students.
Teaching  Methods
Teaching theories primarily fall into two categories or "approaches"
  •            Teacher-Centered
  •            Student-Centered

  •            Lecture Strategies
  •            Problem-Based Learning
  •            Social Networking Tools
  •            Teaching Diverse Students
  •            Team-Based Learning

1. What brain structures does learning depend on?
2. About how many neurons does the brain have?
3. Describe the process of learning new information.
4. How are the pathways between neurons created?
5. How would you apply this in your daily work as a teacher?
6. The brain is where emotions originate. Why is it important for a teacher to know this?
7. To be able to function properly and learn efficiently, the brain needs these:
8. What factors can affect the brain negatively?
9. Is everybody capable of learning? of being intelligent?
10. Write 5 things you will do as a teacher to make sure your students learn.
